Global Organic Textile Standard
The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is a globally recognized textile processing standard for organic fibres, including ecological and social criteria, backed up by independent certification of the entire textile supply chain.
For instance, a textile product carrying the GOTS label grade “organic” must contain a minimum of 95% certified organic fibres, and a maximum of 5% non-organic or synthetic fibres can be used elsewhere, for example seams, cuffs or labels. Whereas a product with the GOTS label grade “made with X% organic” must contain a minimum of 70% organic fibres.
All chemical inputs such as dyes, auxiliaries and process chemicals must be evaluated and meet basic requirements on toxicity and biodegradability. Inputs such as heavy metals, aromatic solvents etc are prohibited. Raw materials, intermediates, final textile products as well as accessories must meet stringent limits regarding unwanted residues.
